How Fovar works

What members pay through Fovar, how they pay it, and where the money goes.

Fovar is an app for community groups: clubs, associations, sports teams, alumni and parents' groups. It helps a group collect its members' dues and pay for the things it shares, with one record that every member can see. Fovar is software made by nbdomains LLC. Every payment is processed by Stripe.

What people pay through Fovar

Membership dues. A group's officers set an amount and a schedule, for example $25 a month. Each member pays their own dues to their own group. The app shows each member what they owe and when it is due.

A member's home screen in the Fovar app: You are all paid up. Nothing owed. Next one due 1 November. Below it, the group's balance, held for the group by Stripe.

A share of a group cost. A group can open a fund for something it pays for together, such as the hall and food for a holiday party, a tournament entry or team kit. Members pay toward it, and everyone can see how close it is.

A shared cost: what it is for, and how close the group is.

Payments from outside the group. A group can share its pay code, so that someone who is not a member can pay toward the group, for example a parent paying toward their child's team trip. No app or account is needed: they enter the code at fovar.app/give and pay by card.

What these payments are

  • They pay for real-world memberships and real-world costs. They are not digital goods: paying dues does not unlock anything in the app.
  • They are paid to the member's own group. They are not charitable donations, and Fovar issues no donation or tax receipts.
  • Fovar's own plans for groups (Pro and Scale) are a separate, digital subscription. In the apps they are sold through the App Store and Google Play.

How a member pays

  1. They open their group in the Fovar app. The home screen shows what they owe, with a button to pay it. To pay toward a group cost, they open that fund.
  2. Stripe's payment screen opens. They pay by card, Google Pay or Apple Pay, or from a US bank account.
  3. They get a receipt, and the payment appears on the group's activity list, which every member can see. Entries are never edited or deleted.
The Activity screen in the Fovar app: dues of $25 from two members and a $40 payment toward the holiday party, each with the member's name.
The group's activity: every payment, on a list every member can see.

Where the money goes

Stripe processes every payment and holds the funds. Before a group can take payments, one of its officers completes Stripe's identity checks for the group. Money leaves a group only when two of its officers approve a payout, and it goes to the group's own bank account, verified by Stripe. Fovar never sees or stores card numbers.
